In the event there are more than 21 named storms in one season, then NOAA will use a name from the World Meteorological Organization’s alternate list of names.
This year’s list of names might look familiar to many because these name lists rotate every six years – a practice which began in 1979. However, unless a particular storm is so destructive and/or deadly, then the World Meteorological Organization will retire the name. The four storms from 2017 that were not recycled in the 2023 list are Harvey, Irma, Maria, and Nate. The Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins on June 1st and concludes on November 30th every year.
